If you talk to any microbiologist for long enough, generally at least 7 minutes or so, you’ll probably land on the topic of how WE’RE OUT OF FUNCTIONAL ANTIBIOTICS.
Outside of really handy bacteria like the gangrene causing Clostridium perfringens, which has been nice enough to — knock on wood — show no signs of figuring out penicillin resistance, everything else is resistant in one way or another to basically everything. Yaaay. Lots of reasons for this, including the fact that antibiotics just aren’t profitable to develop.
Proteomics to the rescue?!? I mean, there aren’t all that many proteins in a bacteria to think about, how hard can it be? You can find out in this great new review here!
This is one of the rare cases where it’s more fun to read in HTML than PDF because of page rotation, but this is a stellar and remarkably comprehensive review.
