Well….this is a pretty paper to look at…..
And I’ll be honest, I don’t know how much of an advance this is over a very recent study using the largely similar APEX technology (both of which are somewhat explained in the post, if you aren’t familiar, I think). APEX/Turbo-ID allow you to actively biotinylate and enrich anything nearby your protein of interest. By placing the activator under a promoter that is only used in a specific context you can get even more ridiculous specificity in what you end up biotinylating.
Looks like a lot of molecular biology is still necessary to pull this off but these studies are so cool that it almost seems worth it!
